About the Christening

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, the nation's newest submarine was christened during a ceremony at Newport News Shipbuilding where the ship is being completed. Diane Donald, wife of Retired Navy Admiral Kirkland Donald serves as Ship's Sponsor. During the ceremony, she performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship's bow during the christening ceremony

Designed to meet the Navy's requirements in a post-Cold War era, the 377-foot-long submarines are capable of submerged speeds of more than 25 knots and can stay submerged for up to three months at a time.
