Newport News Shipbuilding celebrated the landing of the island onto the flight deck of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) during a ceremony on May 29. The event coincided with former President John F. Kennedy’s birthday. The 588-ton island is the control tower for flight deck operations. It is one of the last steel structures to be placed on the ship, signifying that CVN 79 is one step closer to being launched.
